IKEA Uppland Sectional Review: The Perfect Cottage Style Sofa After 2 Years

After two years of daily use, our IKEA Uppland sectional in Karlshov gray-beige has proven itself as the worthy successor to the beloved Ektorp. Why We Upgraded from Ektorp to Uppland

When IKEA discontinued the iconic Ektorp in 2020, we were among the many fans wondering if the Uppland could fill those big shoes. After living with both couches, we can confidently say the Uppland is actually an upgrade in key areas that matter most for comfort and durability.

The Main Differences Between Uppland and Ektorp

Deeper Seat Comfort
The most noticeable improvement is the seat depth. The Uppland measures 23 inches deep compared to the Ektorp’s 19.25 inches. This extra depth makes lounging, curling up with a book, or settling in for movie night significantly more comfortable. Our taller family members (not me!) especially appreciate being able to truly relax without feeling cramped.

Better Cushion Construction
Unlike the Ektorp’s all-foam cushions, the Uppland features pocket springs combined with high-resilience foam and polyester fibers. This construction creates a perfect balance of firm support and soft comfort that hasn’t sagged even after two years of medium-to-heavy use in our upstairs family room loft.

Increased Height
The Uppland sits higher at 36.25 inches tall (with back cushions) versus the Ektorp’s 34.5 inches. This may seem minor, but the extra height provides better back support and makes getting up from the sofa much easier, especially for those with knee issues.

Our Uppland Sectional: Karlshov Gray-Beige Slipcover Review

We chose the Karlshov gray-beige slipcover, and it’s been one of our best furniture decisions. This isn’t your typical solid beige—it’s a sophisticated stripe pattern featuring dark gray, black, and taupe that adds visual interest while remaining neutral enough to work with changing decor. I love to change things up and this cover seems to go with everything.

Durability That Impressed Us

After two years, our Karlshov slipcover looks nearly new despite:

  • Medium-to-heavy use in our family room loft
  • Regular exposure to natural light
  • Occasional spot cleaning
  • Multiple pets in the household

The fabric is a polyester blend with a subtle texture that hides minor marks while remaining soft to the touch. The striped pattern particularly helps disguise any slight wear, making it ideal for real living spaces rather than showrooms.

Cushion Performance

The seat cushions have maintained their shape remarkably well. Unlike traditional foam cushions that develop permanent dents, the Uppland’s pocket spring system bounces back after every use. Even the areas that see the most sitting haven’t developed noticeable impressions.

The back cushions are reversible, which extends their lifespan. When one side starts showing wear (though ours haven’t yet), you can simply flip them over for a fresh look.

Styling Your IKEA Uppland Sectional for Cottage Style

The Uppland sectional with it’s classic rolled arms and skirted slipcover is a natural for cottage, farmhouse, coastal, and English country decor styles. Here’s how we’ve styled ours and recommendations for creating that cozy, lived-in cottage aesthetic:

Layering Textures

Throw Pillows:
Mix and match pillow textures to add depth. We use:

  • Chunky knit pillows in cream
  • Linen pillows with subtle patterns
  • Vintage-inspired florals
  • Striped ticking in coordinating colors

Pro tip: Use 18-22 inch pillow inserts in your 18-inch covers for that plump, high-end look.

Throw Blankets:
Layer 2-3 throws for both style and function:

  • A chunky cable knit blanket draped over one arm
  • A lightweight cotton throw in a complementary neutral
  • A quilted throw for cooler months

Coffee Table Styling

Pair your Uppland with a chunky wood coffee table or a white-washed vintage trunk. We keep our coffee table styling simple:

  • A large dough bowl or wooden tray as an anchor
  • 2-3 coffee table books stacked
  • A small potted plant or fresh flowers
  • A vintage candle or decorative object

I’ve only been putting an ottoman in front of the sectional for now. It’s easy to move out of the way for exercising or playin with our two pups Peanut and Koji!

Area Rug Selection

Ground your Uppland sectional with the right rug:

  • For Karlshov Gray-Beige: Try a jute rug with gray border, vintage Persian in muted tones, or cream shag
  • For White Uppland: Consider a gray and white stripe, natural jute, or patterned runner
  • For Blue Uppland: Pair with creams, natural fibers, or complementary blue tones

Ensure your rug extends at least 18-24 inches beyond all sides of the sectional for proper proportion.

Wall Decor and Lighting

Create a cozy cottage vignette:

  • Hang a large-scale piece of art or a gallery wall above the sofa
  • Add a floor lamp in the corner for ambient lighting
  • Include open shelving nearby styled with books, baskets, and vintage finds
  • Consider shiplap or board and batten accent walls for added cottage charm

Seasonal Styling Tips

Spring/Summer:

  • Swap to lighter throw blankets in cotton or linen
  • Add fresh florals and greenery
  • Use lighter, brighter pillow covers in whites and soft blues

Fall/Winter:

  • Layer warmer throws in wool or fleece
  • Incorporate richer textures like velvet pillows
  • Add seasonal elements like pinecones, plaid patterns, and warm metallics

Frequently Asked Questions About IKEA Uppland Sectional

Is the IKEA Uppland comfortable?

Yes, the Uppland is very comfortable, especially if you prefer a firmer, supportive seat. The pocket spring system provides excellent support while the foam layers add softness. The deeper seat depth (23 inches) makes it more comfortable for lounging than the previous Ektorp. However, some people find it firmer than they expected initially—the cushions do soften slightly with use over the first month.

Will Ektorp slipcovers fit the Uppland?

No, Ektorp slipcovers will not fit the Uppland properly. The Uppland is larger in all dimensions—it’s deeper, wider, and taller than the Ektorp. Ektorp covers will be too small, while Uppland covers will be too large and baggy on an Ektorp frame.

How do you clean Uppland slipcovers?

All Uppland slipcovers are machine washable. Wash in warm water on a normal cycle, but do NOT tumble dry. Air dry or dry on fluff/no heat setting to prevent shrinkage. Different fabrics have slightly different care instructions, so check the care tag. We spot clean between washes and have only needed to fully remove and wash our covers twice in two years.

Does the IKEA Uppland sectional come in pet-friendly fabrics?

Yes, several Uppland slipcovers work well for pet owners. The Hakebo dark gray is noted for being soft with no snags from pets and no pilling. The corduroy options (Kelinge series) are also durable. Our striped Karlshov gray-beige hides pet hair well due to the pattern. All slipcovers are machine washable, which is essential for pet households.

How long do IKEA Uppland cushions last?

Based on our two-year experience and other reviews, Uppland cushions hold their shape exceptionally well thanks to the pocket spring system. Unlike all-foam cushions that can compress permanently, the springs bounce back even after heavy use. Many reviewers with 4+ years of ownership report the cushions still look and feel nearly new.

Can you sleep on the IKEA Uppland sectional?

Yes, the Uppland sectional works well for napping and occasional sleeping. The deeper seat and proper arm height make it comfortable for lying down. However, it doesn’t convert into a bed—if you need a sofa bed, IKEA’s VRETSTORP sleeper sofa uses the same slipcovers as the Uppland and might be a better option.

What is the weight limit for the IKEA Uppland sectional?

While IKEA doesn’t publish specific weight limits, the Uppland is built with a sturdy frame and supportive spring system designed for multiple people. We regularly have multiple adults sit comfortably without issues. The construction appears more robust than the Ektorp it replaced.

Is the Uppland sectional easy to assemble?

Yes, we found the Uppland fairly easy to assemble with two people. The frame comes in sections that attach together, and the process typically takes 1-2 hours. The most challenging part is fitting the cushion covers, which are intentionally snug when new but break in nicely over the first month of use.

How much does the IKEA Uppland 4-seat sectional cost?

Pricing varies by location and slipcover choice, but expect to pay approximately $1,200-$1,600 for the 4-seat corner sectional. We considered it a great price compared to other slipcovered sofas and slipcovered sectionals we looked at. I’ll have links at the end of this post to check on price, shipping and pick up availability.

Can you buy replacement Uppland slipcovers separately?

Yes! This is one of the Uppland’s best features. You can purchase additional slipcovers separately to change your decor seasonally or to have a backup set while washing. Replacement covers typically cost $300-$500 for a sectional, making it affordable to completely refresh the look of your sofa. This is one of my favorite features of an IKEA slipcovered sofa!

Does the IKEA Uppland sectional have storage?

The sectional itself doesn’t have built-in storage, but the matching Uppland ottoman includes storage inside. The ottoman is the perfect size to pair with the sectional and provides substantial hidden storage for throws, pillows, toys, or other living room items. We use the ottoman instead of a coffee table. It’s easy to move out of the way for dance parties or practicing Tai Chi!

What are the dimensions of the Uppland 4-seat sectional?

The 4-seat corner sectional measures approximately:

  • Width: 94.5″ x 94.5″ (each side of the L-shape)
  • Depth: 36.25″
  • Height: 36.25″ (with back cushions)
  • Seat depth: 23″
  • Seat height: 18.25″

These dimensions make it suitable for medium to large living spaces. Measure your room carefully and allow for walkway space around the sectional.

Pros and Cons After 2 Years of Ownership

What We Love

Exceptional durability – Looks new after 2 years
Comfortable deep seating – Perfect for lounging and relaxing
Washable slipcovers – Life-changing for real-life living
Cushions maintain shape – Spring system prevents sagging
Affordable – Excellent value for the quality
Multiple color options – Easy to change up your style
Classic cottage aesthetic – Timeless design
Pet-friendly – Certain fabrics hide hair and resist snags

Minor Considerations

Firm when new – Needs about a month to break in
Cushion covers tight initially – Takes effort to get them on at first
Not compatible with Ektorp – Can’t use old Ektorp covers
Stock availability – Popular colors sometimes sell out
Not a cloud couch – If you want super plush sink-in softness, this isn’t it, but you also won’t need to constantly fluff cushions either!

Is the IKEA Uppland Sectional Worth It?

Absolutely. After two years of daily use, we’re confident recommending the IKEA Uppland sectional, especially in the Karlshov gray-beige slipcover. The combination of affordability, durability, comfort, and the ability to change slipcovers makes it an incredibly smart choice for:

  • Families with children or pets
  • Anyone who loves cozy decor such as cottage, farmhouse, coastal, or English country
  • Budget-conscious shoppers who don’t want to sacrifice quality
  • People who like refreshing their space with seasonal changes
  • Former Ektorp owners looking for an upgrade

The Uppland successfully captures what made the Ektorp beloved while improving on comfort and construction. Its classic design means it won’t look dated in five years, and the washable slipcovers ensure it can look fresh for a decade or more.

For the price point (significantly less than comparable slipcovered sofas from Pottery Barn or Crate & Barrel), the Uppland delivers exceptional value. It’s one of those rare furniture pieces that looks expensive, feels comfortable, and actually holds up to real life.

If you’re considering the Uppland, we say go for it—just remember to give those cushions a month to break in, and consider ordering an extra slipcover set to have on hand for quick seasonal refreshes. Hope this review helps and let me know in the comments if you have any other questions.
