Painted Furniture Before & After and a New Sofa

Is chippy white your vibe? Then you’re going to love this Pottery Barn trunk makeover. It went from grey and blah to cottage gorgeous. Wet distressing and chalk style paint are the keys to this finish.

Furniture Makeover

Before and after grey trunk to painted white

I have to be honest that I was a little nervous about painting this trunk, which never happens! But I had bought this trunk brand new from Pottery Barn years ago. Another thing that never happens. I just loved the size and the finish back then.

But over time, the painted finish on the metal top had chipped up, and not in a good way. The base was grey, a neutral that I use in a lot of my home. At this point I wasn’t sure if I wanted to cover the grey or not.

But I had to admit that it just wasn’t doing anything for the living room, paired with my new Ikea Kivik sectional. I began to think that I would need to replace it with something that I would like better.

If you’re curious about how the modern Kivik sectional sofa is mixing in with farmhouse style, check out my post about it here.

Of course, you know I love a good paint job to refresh a piece of furniture. I figured that I didn’t have anything to lose and could still move it elsewhere if I didn’t like the results.

I decided on white. As much as I love white, nothing but the walls in my living room are white! So I thought it would add some brightness and be a good contrast to the off- white sofa, while still being “beautifully neutral”.

DIY Chalk Style Paint and Wet Distressing

I painted on two coats of my DIY Chalk Style paint. Directions to make it are here.

After about a half hour, I rubbed some areas with a damp cloth. I also sanded in other areas. I went back over some of the distressing with one more coat of white paint, giving it a layered finish. I finished it off with two coats of matte finish polyurethane.

The end result was so much better than I even expected. It went from an oversized, dark trunk to a farmhouse chic coffee table. I think so anyway. Now, I love this trunk all over again. It added the perfect amount of shabby, chippy white to take the modern edge off of the sectional.

Another DIY project that I can cross off the list. It’s a long list so it feels good to cross something off of it!
