Fall Farmhouse TourThere are simple ways to cozy up your home for fall. Embracing the change of seasons in your home decor doesn’t have to be a chore. I gave up lugging bins out of the attic for each season a long time ago.

However, I still enjoy changes in my home to complement the season.

Keeping it simple, the focus is on comfort, function, and all of the senses.

It’s what I call realistic beautiful living. Because what good is a gorgeous, magazine ready home, if it doesn’t work for your family or lifestyle?

So if you’re ready, let’s cozy up your home for fall!

I’m going to focus on what I’ve done this fall in my own living room and dining room as an example.

  1. Lighting:  with the inevitably shorter days on their way, making sure that you have a variety of lighting is a simple way to add some cozy! Lamps for reading, lanterns, and general lighting in the room can make such a difference. Make sure that you’re stocked up on batteries for your lanterns.    Fall living room decor  You also may want to explore different types of light bulbs. Switching out cool ones for warm or daylight bulbs can make a big difference without a lot of effort. If you have live plants, you might even need a grow bulb in a lamp placed near your plants.                                                                   For more fall decor, check out my latest video!

2. Buffalo Checks and Plaids: It’s funny how we relate different seasons to various patterns. Florals for spring, stripes in summer, and definitely plaid and Buffalo check for fall!  Farmhouse fall decor

I actually love Buffalo check all year round. But especially in the fall is just speaks cozy! Tribal prints and Suzani can add a boho vibe to the mix.

3. Textures: I’m such a texture addict all year around! If you love a mostly neutral home, you must add texture.                                                                          Minimalist farmhouse home

Different textures are what bring the layered and warm look and feel to a room.

Think about adding in velvet, burlap, fur, wicker, and sweater knits. These can be on your throws, pillows, drapes/curtains, rugs, or accessories.

Be sure to add in some metal or glass pieces for an interesting mix!

4.Throw pillows and Throws: Probably the hardest working decor in my living room are the throw pillows on my couch. They get squished, thrown on the floor, and generally abused! Then I just fluff ’em up and they look like new again! Fall farmhouse decor

The important part about throw pillows is what’s inside the cover. Use a feather insert and you won’t regret it. Even the most budget friendly cover will look expensive with a feather filler.

They don’t have to be expensive either. I’ve bought several at IKEA and they are fantastic. I’ve also bought them at thrift stores. I just make sure they’re in very good condition and run them through a sanitize (very hot) cycle in my dryer. I even happened upon some on clearance at Restoration Hardware for ten dollars each!

5. A Touch of Black: Adding in a touch of black adds richness and warmth. You could change out a light colored lampshade for a black one, paint a piece of furniture, or add some black accessories such as picture frames. You’ll be amazed at how earthy and cozy a touch of black feels!

6. Fire: Of course if you have a working fireplace, now is the time to get it ready for lots of warm fires! Rearranging furniture to be able to sit by the fireplace is a cozy move.

But don’t despair if you’re without a fireplace! Candles can stand in for the warm fire.

I’m kind of picky when it comes to candles and indoor air quality. Lately I’ve picked up a few battery operated ones. They still give off a warm glow and some even flicker. I don’t have to worry about catching anything on fire either!

I still use a couple of favorite real candles on occasion too. So whatever your choice, fire up the warmth with a toasty glow!

7. Scents: I use a lot of essential oils in diffusers and in my household cleaners. Changing up to warmer scents this time of year is a great way to cozy my spaces. Fall Farmhouse Decor

Cinnamon and clove are favorites, as well as fir and eucalyptus.

Scent is very powerful for memories and mood. So if you only do one thing to add in some fall coziness, this would be it!

8. Flowers and Plants: Bringing flowers inside is a simple way to cozy your space.

But don’t think you’re limited to flowers.

Seed pods, berry stems, interesting stones, acorns, and colorful leaves are all part of the fall experience. Traditionally pumpkins, corn, mums, and hay bales will mark the fall season.

Add a little or add a lot, it’s up to you. Just enjoy the changing season!

9. Rugs:  If you took your rugs up for the summer, now is the time to add them back in. Boho farmhouse rug

Maybe you’re shopping for a new rug.

All I can say is, make sure it’s large enough. Farmhouse fall decor

A rug that’s too small isn’t going to ever feel right. Then you’ll drive yourself crazy trying to figure out why the room feels off. Ask me how I know! Ha!

10. Stock Up On Warm Drinks: Hot tea, coffee, and hot chocolate. Does anything say cozy more than a warm drink on a chilly day? I think this one speaks for itself. Farmhouse dining room

So now we’ve added a few simple touches to cozy up your home for fall. The best part is, it’s not just about pretty home decor. It also works well for your family bringing comfort, mood enhancement, and great memories.

If you’re like me and want to simplify yet still enjoy some seasonal decor, then try a few of these tips.

Let me know how you like your simple, cozy home this fall! Fall Home Tour

    1. Hi Larry. I found it on Facebook marketplace and refinished it. Unfortunately there aren’t any markings on it to tell me where it’s originally from. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful! 😁

  2. Hi Tanya! I found inspiration for my couch choice from you and I have a question now. What size rug did you end up finding most suitable for the size of this sectional? My couch is centered in my space and it can be walked around completely. I was considering an 8×10, but I do not want it to be too small.

    1. Hi Shaina,
Yes, I ended up using an 8×10. I have a fairly small living room and I’ve also had a 9×12 that worked in the room.
      Hope that helps!
